Alex Morgan, one of the most prolific scorers in women’s soccer, will lead the United States’ quest for a third consecutive World Cup title in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament kicks off on July 20 and will feature 32 teams for the first time.
The 33-year-old striker, who has scored 121 goals in 206 international appearances, is among the three veterans who will play in their fourth World Cup for the USWNT. The other two are defender Kelley O’Hara and winger Megan Rapinoe, who won the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards in 2019.
Morgan was also instrumental in the USWNT’s triumphs in 2015 and 2019, netting six goals in each edition. She will be eager to add to her tally and cement her legacy as one of the best players of all time.
The USWNT, coached by Vlatko Andonovski, boasts a mix of experience and youth, with 14 players making their World Cup debut. The team is drawn in Group E with the Netherlands, who were the runners-up in 2019, as well as Portugal and Vietnam. The USWNT will play their group matches in New Zealand.
Andonovski said he was proud of the players’ hard work and motivation to represent their country at the highest level. “It is never easy to select a team for the World Cup, but I am confident that this group has what it takes to make history and bring home another trophy,” he said.
