Timo Werner speaks on how Lampard convinced him to join Chelsea

Chelsea forked out around €50 million to trigger RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner’s release clause and sealed his signature earlier this month.

Werner has accepted to sign a five-year deal and will arrive at the Stamford Bridge on July 1.

Liverpool were also interested in the German marksman who became Leipzig’s record goalscorer after hitting a brace in his side’s final Bundesliga match of this season against Augsburg over the weekend.

Frank Lampard, as per reports, used former goalkeeper Petr Cech as an interpreter to try and persuade him to pick Chelsea as his next destination.

Speaking to BILD, the 24-year old recently admitted that Frank Lampard indeed made an impression on him in their private chats.

He said: “The discussions with the board at Chelsea were so good that I ultimately chose them.

“Frank Lampard in particular stood behind me and really wanted me to know that if I went to Chelsea, I could feel just as comfortable as I do with Leipzig. In the conversations with me, the coach often emphasized how much he wanted me, how much he valued me as a person.

“I’ve decided on something new and I hope that my form will continue like this.”
