Many fans of Suho and EXO were disappointed and angered by his decision to dine at McDonald’s during such a sensitive and critical time in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
On August 2nd, a fan-captured photo of EXO’s Suho at a McDonald’s went viral across online platforms and social media, including X (formerly Twitter).
Later that same day, Suho shared a pic of a McDonald’s burger on the private fan app Bubble, letting everyone know he was enjoying it.
He even mentioned the brand, saying, “I ate McDonald’s for the first time in a year and a half.”
This led to a wave of disappointment among fans, as Suho’s post was seen as free advertising for McDonald’s, a company that’s been targeted for boycott by the BDS Movement.
The situation is particularly sensitive due to Israel’s recent military actions against civilians in the Gaza Strip, which the International Court of Justice has labeled as crimes against humanity.
McDonald’s has been criticized for providing free meals to the Israeli army and has tried to distance itself from the military by taking control of its restaurants in Israel.
However, the donations continue, fueling ongoing backlash and boycott efforts.
Given that Suho is a public figure, his choice to not only eat at McDonald’s but also share it online is viewed as a promotion for a brand that many find controversial.
Fans are even more let down considering Suho participated in a charity event a few months back to support Palestine and its children.
Some are questioning why he would promote a boycotted brand, especially since he’s aware of the situation in Palestine and has previously made donations, leading to accusations of insincerity.
