Spain has been one of the worst affected countries by the coronavirus pandemic. Its impact on La Liga has had serious ramifications, especially on Quique Setien’s Barcelona.
La Liga sides have seen wholesale cuts in salaries for their players in an effort to help the financial impact of coronavirus on football.
There have been suggestions of football restarting sooner rather than later.
But in an interview with radio station RAC1, Setien has condemned the idea of restarting the season until there are some health guarantees in place.
He said:
“Everyone wants to be ready for when the season starts again.”
“But that cannot happen until the health authorities can guarantee that there will be no problems.”
“I have read the protocol and the reality is I don’t know if it can be carried out as it is written.”
“I think it’s unworkable. I think it’s very difficult logistically.”
“The situation is what it is, I don’t know if this means it is OK to give to us the Liga title.”
Since his comments, ESPN has now claimed that their sources close to the Royal Spanish Football Federation are considering the situation should the season not be finished.
According to the sources, the suggestion is Champions, European places and relegation would be determined as the league sits right now.
