Serie A was one of the first leagues in Europe to respond to the growing concerns caused by coronavirus as they suspended the football matches temporarily in February before putting the brakes for an indefinite period last month.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has previously made clear that public safety and health are the prime concerns right now. And until those remain to be at risk, this season will not resume.
It’s been over a month since football was last played. Other than the immediate effects, the prolonged could cause major disruptions in the footballing calendar in the long run.
Seven clubs the likes of which include Torino and Sampdoria, however, have reportedly spoken against resuming the season due to an ‘incalculable risk’.
But Serie A officials are resolved on completing the season. On Monday, the Lega Serie A council met to discuss the proceeding of the remainder of the campaign.
As Goal reports, the statement outlining their plans read: “The Lega Serie A Council that met today unanimously confirmed its intention to complete the 2019-2020 season.”
“If the government allows it to take place in full compliance with the rules for the protection of health and safety.”
“The resumption of sporting activity, in the so-called Phase 2, will take place in accordance with the regulations laid out by FIFA and UEFA.”
“With the decisions of the FIGC as well as in compliance with the medical protocols for the protection of footballers and all professionals.”
