When Real Madrid visits fellow La Liga side Elche on Thursday night, they will be looking to earn a place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. On Sunday, Los Blancos won the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Bilbao, while Elche is coming off a 1-0 win over Villarreal in La Liga. Elche has advanced to the Copa del Rey last-16 stage for the first time since the 2014-15 season, but they will need to be at their best to get any further, having been drawn against the La Liga leaders.
Los Franjiverdes had to win three games to advance to this round of the competition, defeating Leioa, Unionistas de Salamanca, and Almeria, and they have won five of their previous six games in the competition. Elche has also won their past three games in all competitions, defeating Almeria in the Copa del Rey on January 6 and then sweeping Espanyol and Villarreal in the league.
Because of their recent victories, Francisco’s team has moved up to 15th place in La Liga, five points clear of the relegation zone, and they will go into Thursday’s encounter with confidence despite being underdogs. Elche will play Real Madrid in the league again this weekend, and both of their previous encounters have been close games, with Los Blancos winning 2-1 on both occasions, while the points were split in a 1-1 tie during the 2020-21 La Liga season.
Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday night, defeating Athletic Bilbao, with Luka Modric and Karim Benzema scoring in Saudi Arabia. Los Blancos are also in first place in La Liga, five points ahead of second-placed Sevilla, and will meet Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 stage, with the first leg due to take place in the French capital in the middle of next month.
