On Sunday afternoon, Ralf Rangnick will take charge of Manchester United for the first time when the Red Devils host Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
The hosts are coming off a 3-2 home win over Arsenal on Thursday, while Palace are coming off a 1-0 loss away to Leeds United on Tuesday.
Man United came from behind to beat Arsenal 3-2 on Thursday, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice – his 800th and 801st career goals.
Emile Smith Rowe’s strike, which flew into an empty net with David de Gea on the ground with an injury, put the Gunners ahead, but the home side rallied, with Ronaldo’s 70th-minute penalty proving the difference in a 3-2 victory.
Rangnick stood in the stands as Michael Carrick delivered yet another positive outcome, and after the game, the stand-in manager announced his immediate departure from the club.
Rangnick, who is open to staying as head coach beyond the end of the season, is preparing the Red Devils for a new era, and the German will be seeking to make it back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time since mid-September.
The 20-time English champions moved into seventh place in the rankings on Thursday, three points behind fourth-placed West Ham United, and there is little doubt that the new head coach will be expected to secure a top-four finish this season given the squad’s talent.
Rangnick must quickly settle in ahead of a hectic run of fixtures; the club, though, has a pressure-free Champions League meeting with Young Boys next week, having already secured their berth in the next round of the competition as Group F winners.
Palace, meantime, has gone three games without a win in the Premier League, having lost their last two games to Aston Villa and Leeds United, as well as drew 3-3 at Burnley on November 20.
However, the Eagles defeated Manchester City 2-0 away from home at the end of October, and they won 3-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League last season.
