With the weight of expectation on Mikel Arteta’s shoulders, Arsenal will look to return to winning ways against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. In midweek, the Gunners were defeated 2-1 by Everton, while Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team had to settle for a point against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Arsenal’s’soft underbelly’ was once again exposed at Goodison Park, when Everton, who had been on one of their worst Premier League runs since the turn of the millennium, gained a deserved three points over the hapless Gunners.
A first half devoid of any genuine attacking quality ended 1-0 to the Gunners thanks to Martin Odegaard’s score on the stroke of halftime, but Richarlison and Demarai Gray flipped the game on its head as Arsenal once again failed to hold on to a small advantage.
There was some controversy around Ben Godfrey’s unpunished stamp on Takehiro Tomiyasu’s face, but on an evening when Eddie Nketiah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both squandered golden chances to tie the game, Arsenal received what they deserved – nothing.
A pair of defeats since the beginning of the month have dropped the North London club to seventh in the Premier League table, four points off the top four, but thankfully for the home crowd this weekend, the majority of their bad luck has come on the road.
