Chelsea announced on Saturday that they have completed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for a fee reported to be in the range of €50 million.
A player of Werner’s quality could prove to be a tough competitor for the most experienced players even in the most high profile teams.
Oliver Giroud, who is already low in manager Frank Lampard‘s pecking order, as a result, might now have to prepare himself for a much more reduced role.
But Giroud does not see the Leipzig man’s signature as a worrying sign. Rather, he feels it will present him, and the other Chelsea attackers, with the opportunity to step up his game.
The Frenchman told the Guardian: “He [Werner] is going to be a very good signing and will provide more motivation for strikers.
“I’ve been the super sub but I want to make the gaffer’s choices even more difficult.
“All through my career, I have always been through difficulties. The best thing to do is to bounce back. I was close to leaving the club but I didn’t really want to. I needed game-time for the Euros and it’s true I spoke with the gaffer regarding maybe letting me go for another challenge.”
