Official – Robben returns from retirement signs for FC Groningen

The superstar retired last year, went out on a high, completing the domestic treble with Bayern Munich.

The winger’s resume reads like a who is who of footballing royalty. Playing in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven, the Premier League with Chelsea, La Liga with Real Madrid, and of course the Bundesliga with Bayern.

However, many forget that his career started in much a simpler place, But Robben appears to have never forgotten where it all started.

Robben was a youth player at FC Groningen and climbed through the ranks of the Dutch minnows. They granted him his first-team debut at just 16.

It was very clear early on that he would outgrow the club and he was sent on his way with their blessings.

Now though the prodigal son has returned.

Robben today announced he is coming out of retirement to play top-flight football once more, making his very first team also his last.

The club made an official announcement confirming the player’s return:

“Arjen Robben wants to make his comeback on the football fields.”

“The 36-year-old top player has been in training for weeks to be part of the first selection of FC Groningen at the start of the 2020/2021 season.”

“The Pride of the North is delighted and gilded that Robben wants to try once again to make a comeback in professional football out of love for the club.”
