Neville – Alisson has made more impact than Van Dijk at Liverpool

Alisson Becker has been one of the most influential names at Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2018. Since making his debut under Jurgen Klopp, the 27-year-old has conceded only 51 goals in 79 games for the club.

He is having yet another brilliant season.

Alisson joined just six months after Van Dijk joined the club and the presence of both players has helped transform the Reds to a major powerhouse.

The arrival of both players coincide with Liverpool’s Champions League crown last season and the imminent Premier League triumph this season.

Much of the Red’s recent success has been put down to Van Dijk’s displays in defence but Neville believes Alisson has actually been the most important arrival throughout Liverpool’s recent resurgence.

“I think Allison has made Liverpool win the league,” Neville told the Mirror.

“I think when people talk about Van Dijk being the missing piece I think that there is an element of that. But it’s Allison for me.

“Once your goalkeeper is calm, authoritative, saves most shots on his goal and gives confidence to the rest of the team, the impact of that is absolutely incredible.

“For me Van Dijk is one of the best centre halves I have ever seen live but, if you’re talking about the last two years, what’s been the big change for me in Liverpool is the goalkeeper.

“They won the European Cup and they won the league. I put Van Dijk just behind, but Alisson for me has been the biggest impact at Liverpool.”
