Messi and co agree a 70% pay cut to reduce coronavirus losses

One of the most worrisome repercussions for football clubs due to matches remaining suspended is the disruption in their financial situation because of the income streams drying up.

Most clubs, as a result, have urged their players to take a cut in their salaries as long as the coronavirus crisis lasts.

FC Barcelona were reported to be in a conflict with the player as they were unwilling to submit to the club’s will.

But now, Lionel Messi has confirmed that not only the squad has agreed to a 70% pay cut, they will also actively help out the other employees.

Releasing a statement on his Instagram, Messi said:

“We want to clarify that our will has always been to take a cut in the salary we receive because we fully understand that this is an exceptional situation and we are always the first ones to help the club when asked.

“Apart from the reduction of 70 percent from our salary, we will also make contributions so that club employees can collect 100 percent of their salary while this situation lasts.

“Very soon we are going to get out of this and we will all do it together.”
