When Liverpool welcomes Newcastle United to Anfield on Thursday night, they will be looking to make it eight victories in a row in all competitions. Last time out, the Reds won 1-0 against Aston Villa, while Eddie Howe’s men were defeated 4-0 by Leicester City.
It appeared to be one of those days for Liverpool against Aston Villa, thwarted time and again by the inspired Emiliano Martinez, but the indomitable Mohamed Salah was granted the chance to win the day from 12 yards after Tyrone Mings’ foul.
Despite some mind tricks from the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper, Salah confidently converted a penalty that no goalie could have saved to give Liverpool their fifth top-flight win in a row, and their seventh in a row overall.
With Chelsea and Manchester City both winning by one goal last weekend, there has been little movement in the title race, with Liverpool still second in the table — one point behind leaders City and one ahead of Chelsea after 16 games.
Jurgen Klopp’s men may have seen their incredible two-goal-per-game streak come to an end in recent weeks, but only Chelsea (21) have more Premier League goals at home this season than the Reds (19), and Liverpool have won each of their past five at Anfield.
This week’s opponents have also preserved five clean sheets in that span and extended their Anfield unbeaten run to 20 games with a 1-0 win against Villa, so Newcastle will be hoping for a spectacular win on Merseyside.
Even with several players missing due to injury and a COVID-19 cluster, Leicester were too much for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at the King Power, as the Foxes scored four unanswered goals.
With Jamie Vardy on the bench, Patson Daka and James Maddison each had a goal and an assist, while Youri Tielemans scored twice to consign Newcastle to their fifth defeat in eight league games on the road.
Newcastle are tied on points with relegation-threatened Norwich in the relegation zone, and they are one point behind 18th-placed Burnley despite having played one more game.
