Rafael Benitez, the manager of Everton, returns to Stamford Bridge on Thursday for the Toffees’ Premier League match against Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel’s team defeated Leeds United 3-2 at the weekend, while the Merseysiders were defeated 3-1 by Crystal Palace.
Chelsea appeared to be heading for a third consecutive Premier League stalemate at Stamford Bridge during the visit of Leeds, as Raphinha, Joe Gelhardt, Jorginho, and Mason Mount all scored in an exciting game in the English capital.
However, in the dying minutes of the game, Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger won his second penalty of the afternoon, which Jorginho scored to give the Blues a stunning 3-2 victory before tensions erupted after the final whistle.
With Liverpool and Manchester City both winning by one goal over the weekend, the top of the league remains unchanged, with the third-placed Blues one point behind Jurgen Klopp’s men and two behind the incumbent champions.
Chelsea, who have so often prided themselves on defensive stability under Tuchel, have now failed to maintain a clean sheet in any of their previous four Premier League games, which may be cause for concern for the Champions League-winning coach. However, the Blues have scored 15 goals in their past five Premier League home games – an average of three goals per game – and Tuchel’s men are the only team in the division to have scored 20 goals at home this season.
Six days after upsetting a lacklustre Arsenal side, Everton faced a considerably tougher test in the form of Crystal Palace, and the Toffees were no match for this London side, falling 3-1 at Selhurst Park.
Conor Gallagher stole the show with two goals, while James Tomkins also chipped in, while Salomon Rondon’s effort was nothing more than a consolation for the Toffees as the heat mounts on Rafael Benitez.
