Cristiano Ronaldo could have been an ideal candidate to be the recipient of this year’s Golden Ball, suggests Gianluca Vialli.
Ronaldo was the highest scorer of the Juve team, finding the back of the net 31 times across 33 league games, that won their ninth straight Serie A title.
The Portuguese forward was also immense in his side’s run upto the Round of 16 of the Champions League, netting four times in eight games.
The 35-year old’s impressive exploits saw him emerge as a strong candidate in the race to win the 2020 Ballon d’Or, which was eventually canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
A former Juventus attacker suggests he would have selected Atlalanta’s Alejandro Gomez for the prestigious individual accolade had it not been called off while adding that Ronaldo could also have been his preference.
Gianluca Vialli told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “[Alejandro Gomez] has improved over the years, he has become a complete player. He makes the quality and quantity to change the games. He solves them, he wins them.
“Fantastic. But there’s [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar, [Robert] Lewandowski and you’ll say, oh well, I would award Gomez the Ballon d’Or. But not giving it to any of these is difficult.”
