Eden Hazard has been backed to win Ballon d’Or by Roberto Martinez

Big things were expected from Eden Hazard when he realized his lifelong dream and completed a €100 million transfer to Real Madrid from Chelsea last summer.

So far, however, things have not turned out to be quite as how the Real Madrid fans, or he himself, would have imagined.

Hazard made just 15 appearances all season prior to football’s suspension and found the back of the net only once, with fitness issues forcing him to spend much more time on the sidelines than on the pitch.

But Roberto Martinez is optimistic about his fellow countryman’s chances of finding his feet back. The Belgium head coach also backed Hazard to leave his mark at his new club.

“He can totally win the Ballon d’Or with Real Madrid, without a doubt,” Martinez told Cadena Ser.

“Sometimes it takes a difficult start at your new club to give everything you have inside and understand what it means to play in a great club like Real Madrid. Eden does not miss games, he lost 18 games with Chelsea in eight years and this has been circumstantial.

“I think Real Madrid fans are confident that he will bring many successes.”
