When Liverpool travels to San Siro to face AC Milan on Tuesday night, they will be looking to make it six wins in a row in the 2021-22 Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp’s team has already qualified for the knockout stages, while the Rossoneri are in a three-way fight for second place in Group B.
AC Milan travelled to the Wanda Metropolitano on the penultimate matchday of Group B to face Atletico Madrid, hoping to avoid being on the receiving end of another 97th-minute Luis Suarez penalty.
The Rossoneri have struggled to assert their supremacy on the continental stage, but in one of the tournament’s heartwarming success stories, former delivery driver Junior Messias scored his first goal for the club on his maiden Champions League start to give Milan a critical 1-0 win.
Milan’s lone win of the 2021-22 competition so far – after losing three and drawing one of their first four games in Group B – and despite appearing to be on the verge of relegation, the Rossoneri are now only one point behind second-placed Porto.
Their fate is out of their hands, but a win at San Siro combined with a draw between Porto and Atletico would see Stefano Pioli’s side qualify for the last-16, and they have won back-to-back Serie A games over Genoa and Salernitana before of this clash.
This season, no visiting team has kept a clean sheet at the San Siro, and there is no better time for Milan to win their first Champions League home game since September 2013, especially with Liverpool playing for pride.
On matchday five, Liverpool would not recreate their goal-laden Estadio do Dragao exploits of the past, as a revamped Reds squad welcomed Porto to Anfield, having already secured their place in the knockout stages.
However, the Reds put up a professional display to win 2-0 and maintain their perfect record in Group B, with Thiago Alcantara scoring a stunning goal before Mohamed Salah added his trademark goal.
