When Manchester United welcomes Young Boys to Old Trafford on Wednesday night, they will be looking to cap off a victorious 2021-22 Champions League group-stage campaign.
As Group F champions, the Red Devils have already gone to the round of 16, although Young Boys may still finish third if they win in Manchester and hope that Atalanta BC loses to Villarreal.
On Sunday, Ralf Rangnick got off to a winning start as Man United interim manager, with Fred’s second-half goal giving the Red Devils a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League; the result pushed the team into sixth place in the table, just three points behind the top four.
The 20-time English champions will play away games against Norwich City and Brentford in their next two league games, and Rangnick will be able to rest players for this Champions League match because the club has already qualified for the knockout phase as Group F winners.
Man United did not have the ideal start to the season in the group stage, losing away to Young Boys in mid-September, but they have picked up 10 points in their past four games, including a 2-0 win against Villarreal on November 23 that guaranteed a place in the round of 16.
It will be fascinating to see what the team can achieve under Rangnick this season, with the German’s high-pressing style of football on full display against Palace on Sunday; it wasn’t perfect, but it was a huge improvement, and the clean sheet was the team’s first in the league at Old Trafford this season.
The Christmas period will be crucial for the Red Devils in their effort to return to the top four, as will the January transfer window. Despite their early-season troubles, the club is still more than capable of carving out a successful 2021-22 campaign.
