Real Madrid president criticized for selling ‘unbeatable’ Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo did in nine years at Real Madrid what no player had done before in the club’s history nor is likely to do anytime soon in the future.

The Spanish side won four Champions League, three of which were on the bounce, with him in the team, with CR7 the top scorer of the competition in each of those triumphs.

A total of 438 appearances was made by the Portuguese in the famous white shirt with a staggering 450 goals scored.

It came as a shock to the Madridistas and football fans in general when his departure from Santiago Bernabeu was announced in 2018.

Reports have claimed a disagreement regarding his contract extension led to his exit, with the European record goalscorer demanding to become the world’s highest-paid player ahead of Lionel Messi but the club unwilling to bend its wage structure for him.

Whatever may be the reason, former Real Madrid president Roman Calderon insists it was an unwise decision from Florentino Perez to let go of Ronaldo.

Calderon told Goal: “That attitude and his natural conditions make him unbeatable. Without a doubt, he is an example for young people who aspire to succeed in the sport.

“The player understood that it [joining Real Madrid] was a great opportunity to advance his career and obtain titles and earn personal recognition.

“He was not wrong, he achieved four Ballons d’Or and four Champions League titles, and set records in terms of goals scored in several seasons. Something within reach of very few people.

“It was a big mistake by the current president [Perez] to sell him for €110m ($133m/£99m) after nine years in the team. It is a pity because he is showing in Italy that he is still one of the best in the world.”
