The two teams on the opposite ends of the pitch experienced opposite ends of the emotional spectrum as Manchester City beat Arsenal 3-0 on their return to the Premier League.
Arsenal’s troubles started right from the beginning of the match but it was when David Luiz stepped onto the pitch at the 24-minute mark that truly triggered their misery.
Luiz’s error led to his side conceding their first goal while another of his foul resulted in City being awarded a penalty, for which he was then given marching orders.
Last night’s display further reduced the chances of a contract extension for the defender who is set to drop to the free-agent pool at the end of this season. But he is not ready to give up on his future at the club just yet.
“It’s not the team’s fault, it was my fault,” Luiz told Sky Sports.
“Today I think the team did well, especially with 10 men. The coach is amazing, the players did amazing, it’s just my fault.
“It was all about my contract, whether I stay or not. I have 14 days to be here, and that’s it. I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions.”
