FSV Mainz have given a fantastic response to a racist fan who cancelled their membership and also gave a befitting reply to the racist.
Given recent public events, racism is at the forefront of current events. So when a Mainz fan decided to make comments of a racial nature the German club seized the opportunity to publicly rid its club of this individual.
Football clubs and footballers have been using their high public profiles to promote the anti-racism campaign that is gathering momentum across the globe.
Such has been the public outcry it has given each of us with a sense of urgency to act and promote equality in every walk of our lives.
However, with an apparently disgruntled Mainz fan, it awoke his true inner self that the club was quite happy to publicly denounce and remove from their organization.
The unhappy individual wrote:
“For several months now I have been unable to identify myself with this club.”
“I’ve since gotten the impression that I’m at the Africa Cup, instead of in the German Bundesliga.”
“I’m not racist in any way. I resent that.”
“But when the starting line-up for the past weeks has featured nine (!!!) Black players.”
“This is no longer the club that has been near and dear to my heart over all these years.”
Mainz official response can be summed up in one word “fantastic!”
They said: “While we usually regret to hear of anyone wanting to cancel their membership.”
“In this instance we cannot begin to express any regret.”
“Yes, you are right: you cannot identify yourself with our club.”
“For us, skin color or any other characteristics simply do not play a role.”
“All that matters to us is that someone is human and that they share in our values.”
“We welcome your cancellation as the reasons you’ve given clearly prove that you do not share those values that our club is based on.”
