With nine matches still to play, Bundesliga was brought to a halt last month as Germany grappled with the effects of the pandemic.
However, new cases of COVID-19 has seen a dip in recent times takes and the nation has now implemented partial relaxation on its strict lockdown protocols.
Now, Germany’s Bundesliga could become one of the first European leagues to return to action behind closed doors.
Markus Soder, the Prime Minister of Bavaria and Armin Laschet, the Prime Minister of Nordrhein-Westfalen, suggest they would not stand in the way of football matches returning as long as restrictions are followed.
“The prerequisite is that there is a well-thought-out concept,” Laschet told Bild. “What the DFL has presented in the last few days shows that there are safeguards. I could imagine that we could return to games behind closed doors.”
Soder echoed his counterpart’s sentiments, he said: “It is a tightrope walk. We now have to be careful not to overdo it or be frivolous.”
“It is conceivable that we might be able to play such a round of ‘ghost games’ at the earliest from May 9.”
