La Liga president is open to suspending it

Javier Tebas says La Liga will act in accordance with the Spanish government if they decide to suspend football matches.

La Liga recently followed suit with Serie A, Champions League, Bundesliga, and other top European leagues and decided to quarantine the football stadiums in the wake of the Coronavirus epidemic.

On Tuesday, the Spanish government announced that the next two matchdays in the nation’s top two divisions will be played behind closed doors.

But president Javier Tebas insists the league’s governing body will abide by the government’s rulings if they advise for La Liga to be suspended.

He said: “Professional football is not stopping because the government has considered that it sufficient to play behind closed doors.

“If the government had considered it necessary to suspend the championship, they would have said so. The Spanish government and the autonomous communities are the guarantors of the fans’ and players’ health in cases like these.

“If the government says that the competition must be suspended, it will be suspended.” per Marca
