Tottenham Hotspur will play for the first time in two weeks on Sunday, when they host title-chasing Liverpool in the main event of a COVID-affected Premier League weekend. The hosts’ past three games in all competitions have been postponed owing to outbreaks, although Liverpool have yet to miss a game despite recording three suspected positive tests themselves this week.
Tottenham will have had a peculiar experience having two weeks off at what is typically the busiest season in the Premier League schedule, and only time will tell whether it proves to be an advantage or a hindrance in Sunday’s meeting. Due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Tottenham Hotspur team, games against Rennes and Brighton & Hove Albion were cancelled, before positive cases in the Leicester City camp forced the postponement of their midweek meeting at the King Power Stadium.
All of this means that Antonio Conte’s team hasn’t played since December 5, when Lucas Moura, Davinson Sanchez, and Son Heung-min scored in a 3-0 win over Norwich City. Spurs have already won three Premier League games in a row, and a win over Liverpool this weekend will give them four in a row for the first time since July 2020.
Tottenham’s passivity has dropped them to seventh place in the Premier League table, despite having at least two games in hand on every other team in the league save Burnley, and three games in hand on fourth-placed Arsenal, whom they lead by four points.
