Premier League: Manchester City Vs Wolves Live

Manchester City host Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League after their seven-game unbeaten run came to an end in midweek. Pep Guardiola’s players were defeated 2-1 by RB Leipzig in midweek, and the visitors were defeated by a late Liverpool winner at Molineux last weekend.

Man City’s status as Champions League Group A champions had already been confirmed before they travelled to RB Leipzig for a meaningless meeting on the penultimate matchday, with the German club benefiting from the new manager bounce following Jesse Marsch’s sacking.

Achim Beierlorzer’s Bundesliga side interrupted City’s seven-game winning streak in all competitions with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Andre Silva, with Riyad Mahrez’s header not enough to threaten a late comeback.

However, City’s 3-1 success over Watford, thanks in large part to an outstanding Bernardo Silva performance, allowed them to capitalise on Chelsea’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers and recover top spot in the Premier League table, one point ahead of second-placed Liverpool.

The reigning English champions have now won five games in a row in the top flight – scoring at least two goals in each game – and their title destiny is now in their own hands ahead of a difficult winter months, even at this early stage of the season.

Guardiola’s team has been far from faultless at home this season, but they welcome Wolves to the Etihad on a four-game winning streak and are determined not to let their midweek defeat dampen their domestic fortunes.

Last Saturday, Wolves were the latest victims of a last-minute Divock Origi winner, but Bruno Lage must have felt his luck had changed when Diogo Jota somehow fired the ball at Conor Coady when he had the entire goal to aim at.

However, Origi came off the bench to hammer home Liverpool’s winner in the fourth minute of second-half injury time, marking Wolves’ third game without a win or a goal in the Premier League, as their European ambition suffered yet another setback.

Lage has overseen a terrible decline in fortunes, with just one win from their last five in the top flight, and his side currently sit eighth in the rankings, two points behind seventh-placed Arsenal and three below Manchester United.
